Purple Haze Processing

As for the opening of my brand new blog I am giving you all a free mini tutorial
to re-create the purple haze on your own photos. I applied this way of processing
on my first photo from san Francisco to give it a retro / modern look.

This will be the final result after the tutorial

So lets start with opening a un processed photo.

Then go to Layer > New fill layer > Solid color > OK
To select the purple solid color from the color picker enter the following RGB code: R144 G73 B133 or this Hex code: 904985 and finish with OK
And set the layer Fill opacity to 26%

Go to the adjustments window and select “Curves” and draw a curve just like you see on the screenshot below.

Then go to Layer > New fill layer > Solid color > OK
To select the vanilla solid color from the color picker enter the following RGB code: R254 G252 B239 or this Hex code: fefcef and finish with OK
And set the layer opacity to 21% and the layer fill opacity to 77%

And your done! if the outcome is not exactly what you’d aspected you can easily change the final result by tweaking the purple / vanilla colors or by drawing another curve.

Enjoy!

kj - hey siebie!

been looking at some tutorials here and testing them.. thanks a lot! i didnt expect your settings to be so “general” – i thought it would include more dodge/burn layers and general fidgeting.

one question – what does the vanilla multiply layer do? it looks too close to pure white and too transparent to be doing anything, in order for me to get results by it that are ..visible.. i have to make the color deeper and the layer less transparent. i notice in my own processing that some times, while fiddling, i turn my general settings down so much it’s barely visible.. is that what happened, or is there a difference between our screens?

devetpan - I did some minor contrast changes John, just added a bit more contrast so the car doesn’t look “flat” after processing

John - great tutorial! but i have a question to your workflow… did you any preprocessing in lightroom / camera raw before your postprocess in photoshopor is the source image of this tutorial the original out of cam?
